Judd Trump of England beat Lyu Haotian of China 5-1 to advance to the round of 16 at the World Snooker Tour’s Xi’an Grand Prix in Xi’an, northwest China’s Shaanxi Province, on Wednesday.

Trump built a quick 2-0 lead over Lyu with breaks of 61 and 68 in the first and second frames, respectively. Lyu then wasted an opportunity to rally in the third on a red and had to watch Trump claim the frame with a break of 94.

After dropping the fourth frame, Lyu pulled one back in the fifth with a century break. But Trump opened the following frame with a break of 54 and after his opponent failed on a black, the Englishman launched another attack to seal the deal.

Mark Allen of Northern Ireland defeated Xiao Guodong of China to reach the round of 16 as well. Allen had century breaks in each of the first two frames to lead 2-0. Xiao responded with an 86-1 run to cut the deficit to one frame, but Allen quickly returned the favor 93-1.

Xiao exploited Allen’s failure on a red in the fifth to claim the frame 111-1 and trim the overall deficit to 3-2. He then committed a series of errors in the next two frames and Allen won the match 5-2.

Alhough Allen hasn’t won any titles this season, he has been World No. 1 since the end of the World Championship in Sheffield, England, in May. That position has also been held in the past by Trump.

“For me, I feel like I’ve been that [dominant] player for maybe the last four or five years now,” Trump said before the 2024-25 season. “If you look at titles won in that five-year period, I think I’m quite a way clear. For me, my aim this year is just to win as much as possible and try and get back to number one in the world.”

Of course, Allen has no intention of giving up his newly-earned status as the world’s top-ranked player.

“I know Judd Trump is not far behind me and if he wins titles, then there won’t be much I can do,” Allen told the World Snooker Tour. “But I’m here [in China] to win the tournament too. I know I have a lot of points to defend from two years ago, so I need to keep winning. Saudi [Arabia] will be huge in terms of the number one ranking because the money there is so big. But it’s nice to be the one they are all chasing.”
