Chinese athletes finished the first day at the World Aquatics Swimming World Cup in Singapore on Thursday with one gold, two silver and one bronze medals.
Qin Haiyang finished top in the men’s 100-meter breaststroke final in 55.61 seconds, matching the World Cup record of the event and beating Ilya Shymanovich of Belarus and Caspar Corbeau of the Netherlands.
Shymanovich had the silver with a performance of 55.72 seconds. Corbeau got the bronze in 56.67 seconds.
Yang Junxuan and Yu Yiting added two silver medals for China. Yang came in second in the women’s 50-meter freestyle final in 23.89 seconds, 0.66 behind the winner Katarzyna Wasick of Poland. Siobhan Bernadette Haughey of China’s Hong Kong earned the bronze with 24.00 seconds.
Yu competed with Kate Douglass of the U.S. for the women’s 100-meter medley gold and lost by 0.87 second as Douglass touched the wall first in 56.57 seconds. The bronze went to the other American, Beata Nelson, who finished the race in 57.53 seconds.
Douglass also dominated the women’s 200-meter breaststroke event by setting the new world record in 2:12.72. She beat silver medalist Alina Zmushka of Belarus and bronze medalist Tara Kinder of Britain in the final.
China’s Pan Zhanle began the third stop of the World Cup with the men’s 400-meter freestyle bronze medal. He finished the competition in 3:38.79 in the final, behind 3:34.46 by gold medalist Duncan Scott of Britain and 3:36.97 of Kieran Smith of the U.S..
