In Longhu Mountain, Shangqing Town, Jiangxi Province, there’s a very special man – a ranger who’s dedicated himself to the protecting of a very special duck: the Chinese merganser. Rain or shine, whatever the weather, he embarks on his mission to protect the mergansers before dawn. Silently, entirely alone, he braves the mountains and forests, safeguarding the lush landscapes and protecting the area’s rare flora and fauna, especially the Chinese merganser, which is endangered worldwide to such an extent that it is often referred to as the “giant panda of birds.” What’s more, over the past 18 years, he’s chronicled his activities, taking more than 200,000 photos and over 20,000 gigabytes of video footage, providing invaluable first-hand data on the Chinese mergansers. Hats off to Xiao Dongyang, Longhu Mountain’s ranger extraordinaire, champion of the mergansers!
