The Chinese action game “Black Myth: Wukong,” based on the classic Chinese novel “Journey to the West,” has recently taken the internet by storm. Beyond its stunning visuals and gripping storyline, many fans are also mesmerized by the game’s action design, featuring fluid combat and lifelike motions and expressions.

To create the most realistic characters possible, “Black Myth: Wukong” employs extensive motion-capture technology and professional motion-capture actors. One of the key contributors to the game’s success is Yin Kai, a young man from Zibo, Shandong Province, who performed most of the motion capture for the game’s protagonist.

When Yin first learned that he would be playing Wukong – or the Monkey King – in the game, he was thrilled. “Many people have dreamed of being the Monkey King since childhood. I practiced martial arts from a young age and even learned monkey staff techniques, so it was a perfect match,” he said.

In the game, every move and combat technique of the characters is carefully crafted. To create the game’s intense and beautiful fight scenes, Yin incorporated elements of traditional Chinese martial arts and opera.

In addition to the protagonist, Yin also contributed to the motion capture for several familiar monsters in the game. When portraying these characters, he and the team worked hard to give each one a unique personality, considering details like what weapons they would use and what fighting techniques they prefer.

Reflecting on his journey as a motion capture actor, Yin admits it was a matter of chance. He has loved martial arts since childhood, starting at age 5 and winning awards in city-level competitions by age 9. Though the physical demands of martial arts training were tough, he never gave up.

For Yin Kai, since the day he stepped into the world of motion capture acting, hard work and exhaustion have become routine. But, as he expressed, seeing his performances being appreciated by audiences makes it all worthwhile.
