Ho Iat Seng, chief executive of the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR), said he will not stand for re-election slated for October.
“I have profound feelings for Macao and have done my utmost for Macao’s development, but due to the fact that my health has not been fully restored, for the sake of Macao’s long-term development and from the perspective of the overall situation, I have decided not to participate in the election for the sixth-term Chief Executive,” he said in a statement published on the SAR government’s website on Wednesday.
The nomination period for candidates in the upcoming Macao chief executive election will be from August 29 to September 12, and election day is designated on October 13.
Ho was elected chief executive of the Macao SAR on August 25, 2019. Each term lasts five years.
