Chinese Disarmament Ambassador Shen Jian on Monday highlighted that the current lack of strategic trust among major powers, combined with escalating geopolitical tensions and regional conflicts, presents unprecedented challenges to the international nuclear disarmament process.

Shen made the remarks at the 79th UN General Assembly’s First Committee on nuclear disarmament. He urged countries to work together to reduce nuclear risks, promote disarmament and prevent nuclear proliferation to safeguard global peace and security.

The envoy emphasized the urgent need to de-escalate regional tensions and quickly achieve ceasefires. He called for a substantial reduction in the role of nuclear weapons in national security policies, an end to the forward deployment of strategic forces, and adherence to a pragmatic and feasible approach to nuclear disarmament.

He also stressed the importance of viewing nuclear transparency issues with objectivity and rationality, and promoting international non-proliferation efforts. He pointed out that effectively addressing the significant risks and challenges in the nuclear arena requires comprehensive solutions. He cautioned that clinging to Cold War mindsets, amplifying major power rivalries and provoking bloc confrontations will only drive the international nuclear arms control process into a dead end.

Shen stated that China advocates for the international community to embrace the vision of “common, comprehensive, cooperative and sustainable security.” He urged a commitment to genuine multilateralism, respect for each other’s legitimate security concerns and a collaborative effort to advance the international nuclear arms control agenda.
